I never thought that Bollywood would win in my house as neither me or my husband watch modern Bollywood movies.
However, in a week when we were quarantined at home, I got out a number of Disney Classics from Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and 101 Dalmations to entertain the children. Unfortunately they didn’t work and my daughters chose films such as Mohabattein, Khabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Lagaan, Hum Tum, as their preferred entertainment.
This came as a surprise to me. They love the Disney books and I thought they would love the animation too. Instead they found them scary, violent and really unpleasant.
Bollywood on the other hand was colourful, fun, full of music and the only villain was a family member whose fear was definitely not visual. They didn’t even mind the emotional journey and would just ask a lot of questions “like why did his daddy send him away?”
I don’t know if other parents have found their young children frightened of Disney Classics but I do think that maybe Hollywood has something to learn from Bollywood.
