MF Husain
Sotheby’s London will hold an auction of modern and contemporary Indian art on June 11th and an exhibition of the available art will open from the 6th of June.
I simply love the works by the Great Masters of Indian art. Dead and dying, these rare icons of Indian art are inimitable. I wasn’t exposed to them growing up and learned about them through my frequent trips to India.
The paintings by the gang that comprise the Great Masters, including MF Husain, SH Raza, Krishen Khanna and Satish Gujral. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the latter two in Delhi and it was such a treat. Krishen Khanna gives the most insightful speeches at functions full of passion for art and creativity.
I’ve been to galleries in Delhi and the Indian art fairs. The Great Masters are still head and shoulders superior in their ability and execution and genuineness. So much contemporary art that I’ve seen in Delhi comes across contrived and amateur, lacking a soul.
Artists to look out for in this Sotheby’s auction are: Maqbool Fida Husain (MF Husain), Francis Newton Souza (FN Souza) and Syed Haider Raza (SH Raza) and Krishen Khanna. The art is mostly from private collections so do pop along, they might disappear into another private collection for decades!
