Fashion, flash bulbs and lots of flapping around. You probably heard all the fashion weeks started a few weeks ago. I left it til near the end to summarise what you need to know as consumers (this article is part 1 of 4). For all the attention that the official fashion weeks get, they are nevertheless trade events and not open to the public. They are extremely photogenic events to pepper media cycles routinely filled with political scandal and daily humdrum.

Do you have a global style or are you very British/American/European in your dress sense? My sis is very preppy Ralph Lauren despite being British and she really rocks the look. I’m into more of a global style and I enjoy mixing new fashion with vintage turning shopping trips into treasure hunts!
So…..what trends came through in NY?
Colour: Monochrome especially black and white will still be in next Summer so hold on to your mod style purchases. The biggest monochrome surprise at NY fashion week must have been Ralph Lauren, it seemed as though some were left speechless in good and bad ways.

White is still big, no surprise there as it’s always huge in Summer. However, darker more Autumnal tones such as maroon and dark blue were prominent too.

Shimmering metallic will be big especially shimmering metallic leather. It was trend of SS13 too, however, I don’t think it filtered down to the High Street much.

Crop tops will still be on trend, if you were brave enough to buy and wear them in SS13 hold on to them or scream with glee that you’ll have more to select from next season.
Michael Kors…love this green!
Gauze: as in netting fabric or the sheer look. Layering is key here….catwalks are not real life scenarios keep your nipples to yourself!

Birkenstocks: YIKES! No Way. Not on my feet or in a 20 mile radius of my feet.
Retro: colours and accessories not silhouettes. Sherbet shades and scarves will keep you on trend.

Safari: You know what to do. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe showed a top in her collection very heavily inspired by YSL. Almost copy pasted.

Prints: Floral and stripes are the ones to look out for. I’m sure you already have both of those prints in your wardrobe.
