Stirling Prize for Architecture 2013

Astley Castle dining room

Wow, what an amazing renovation to a crumbling old castle that was once home to no less than three queens!!

Astley Castle won this year’s most coveted award in architecture, the Stirling Prize.  The castle in Warwickshire was renovated by Witherford Watson Mann architects at a cost of £2.5 million.  The architects married amazing contemporary features with the original 800 year old stone work and the resulting finish is complimentary, fresh and seeped in history. The ceiling was destroyed by a fire in 1978 so the renovation includes glass ceilings.

My absolute favourite room is the dining room with its amazing open windows and original medieval stonework with a huge fire place to keep the cool winds out.

The castle is now available to rent through The Landmark Trust from £675 for  4 nights and sleeps eight.
