Wow!
So much beauty, luxury, indulgence, fashion and history all in the most stunning historic Mughal ruins in one of Delhi’s top tourist sites, Rohit Bal raised the bar to tremendous heights for Indian fashion. Even the moon and the weather obeyed the designer’s ode to beauty. The moon shone brightly to the right of one of the tombs at Qutab Minar and the outdoor temperature dropped from Sweaty to Serene.

Rohit Bal’s closed Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week with his ‘Gulbarg’ collection; a collection dedicated to the Mughal gardens of Kashmir and the Valley’s unparalleled beauty. Referencing a ‘Kingdom of Jannat’, flowers have always been held sacrosanct and indeed the only accessories on the female models were lush, fragrant red roses worn in the hair and forehead. Embroidery motifs were inspired by the peony, chrysanthemum, the trellis of wild roses and the ubiquitous lotus.

Ivory was the leading tone for both men and women with colour and drama gradually seeping into the wide sweeping collection. The fabrics included the designer’s favourite fine handlooms like chanderi, fine mulmul, matka silk and voile while velvet lends a hint of luxury. Techniques like hand-block printing have been used with vegetable dyes and gold leaf embossing and hand embroidery included silk needlework. The glamorous but elegant collection made an extravagant use of thread and metallic gold.
