The gowns were all pretty meh this year so I thought it might be more interesting to concentrate on the hair and make up. After all, how many of us will ever wear a couture gown but we can all afford even the most expensive lipsticks and contouring powders!
The cold undertones of the bubblegum pink lippie is such a beautiful contrast to the nude dress and really flatters JLo’s skin tone.
Thandie Newton and Kerry Washington both demonstrate a perfect classic smoky eyes and rose lips look.
I hope this look adequately conveys my long-held opinion that deeper skin tones look better in lighter shades rather than heavy brown/deep red lipsticks that make up artists usually stick on. The pink lipstick Kerry is wearing makes her skin glow with good health.
Lupita Nyongo looks amazing in metallics, especially the eyeshadow continued along the bottom lash line. It’s interesting that Lupita opten for a Calvin Klein Collection gown for the high profile event when the designer gets slated regularly for the insistence on all white models for each of the brand’s catwalk shows. Co-incidence is one thing but Calvin Klein allegedly request this at the model casting stage. It’s a beautiful gown though.
I LOVE Solange’s wavy bob and matte scarlet lipstick. She looks amazing in the polo neck too except…she also demonstrates how important a good bra is. Either the dress is a little tight across the chest or Solange’s bra needs hiked up an inch at least!
And now contouring… the good the bad and the creepy.
GOOD:
I wanted to show this wonderful undercut technique if you’re blessed with tonnes of hair but can’t manage it. One of my best friends has done this technique for years. The undercut is visible as Rosamund Pike has her hair up but when hair is down no one would ever know…
BAD:
Heavy contouring and barely there make up isn’t a good look on Nicole Kidman who usually gets her look spot on. Is the eyeshadow custom-matched to her hair? Very odd tone.
CREEPY:
The contouring, the eyeliner, the caked foundation…the leching on Scarlett Johansson…Please stop.
