I have always wanted to go ever since

Once Upon A Time Mumbai

mumbai-gang-rape

Mumbai used to be one of the safest cities for women… in Mumbai women can stay out late without worries.  These are a couple of comments I have heard repeatedly on the near blanket coverage of the recent Mumbai gangrape story.  A 22 year old photojournalist out on an assignment with a colleague was violently sexually assaulted by five men in the early evening of a central Mumbai area, albeit an abandoned mill.

A wake up call or is there a collective selected memory loss?

The Most Overpaid Apprentice in the World

prince-charles

HRH Prince Charles, the world’s longest serving and most overpaid apprentice, has been making MPs nervous with his increasing desires to meddle in British politics.  The Guardian newspaper reported over the weekend that Prince Charles has seconded two of his staff to government offices, one was even in the cabinet!

Can Dark Be Beautiful?

dark is beautiful image

Bunty and I have covered the subject of skin lightening creams before (e.g. here: Nice Tan Lines).  A new campaign has launched in India with the slogan Dark is Beautiful.  Whilst we find this rather patronising, the aim of the campaign is to drum home the message that fair skin is not the only description of beauty and that people should be happy and proud of the colour that they are… in addition, possibly, to educate other Indians to reset their prejudices.

The skin lightening industry in India is worth over a staggering $400 million and the lightening products on offer range from face creams to a fanny wash.  Fairness = beauty = success = happiness = a guaranteed place in heaven??

Wanker Of The Week

Eddie Shah court case

Step up Eddy Shah!

Where does this guy get off? Apparently by reckoning underage girls i.e. CHILDREN that consent to sex must take the blame for the abuse they suffer. He doesn’t mean “rape rape” he means girls who “throw themselves as celebrities” I certainly hope he’s not describing himself as a celeb, I thought he was Asian until I saw his gross face on our screens after being acquitted for raping two underage girls (acquitted due to lack of evidence, not that he didn’t do it).

Too Expensive For You

YSL with black models

We all know about Oprah’s shameful discriminatory experience at an upmarket boutique in Switzerland whilst shopping for Tina Turner’s wedding (Tina Turner’s wedding news is amazing).  Oprah was being judged by the colour of her skin and, according to some journalists who have since analysed the story, the discrimination was also due to her weight.

This story broke in the same week that the New York Times published an article on the disgraceful racism in the fashion industry especially

Prince-of-Wales-Book-of-Mormon-Marquee-Front-Night-800

Believe the hype! The Book of Mormon is amazing, the most funniest musical of all time. I didn’t know anything much about it in advance and I am certain that added to the enjoyment. The cast, set, lighting but most of all the script and lyrics are just so much fun!

Nice to say something nice about Rhianna that doesn’t include her bum cheeks. (On that note, put them away Rhianna I’m trying to eat my cocopops).

She won her case against Topshop for using her image on their T-shirts. Topshop tried to argue that the photographer owned the copyright in the photo (correct)

Dubai: The Gloss Peels Off

palm-islands-dubai

News that Dubai has pardoned the 24 year old Norweigian woman’s 16 month sentence after reporting being raped has come as welcome news.  The story became a PR disaster for the country with many newspapers and TV channels musing how to digest the glitzy image Dubai portrays with the sheer daft misogyny of the Norweigian woman’s ordeal.

Of course, in context, she is actually lucky

White Teeth

white teethYours, not Zadie Smith’s…. I’ve become mildly obsessed with teeth whitening these days.  This is possibly due to it being Summer and my desire to wear the new peach and pink lippies and my belief that these shades look best paired with white teeth, however, I am generally obsessed with white teeth.

Americans are often appalled by British teeth and we Brits roll our eyes

Halal And Kosher Meat Available Here

poland

My mother is mortified that I’ve been a veggie since about 2006. She has only just recently accepted that chicken is still meat.  I told her once that even if I did ever eat meat again (yuck) I would not touch halal meat because I find the procedure cruel and inhumane. Yes, personification of an animal but can you truly say an animal does not feel distressed when she knows she is bleeding to death?

Charles Saatchi: The Hole Gets Deeper

saatchi nigella lawson

My favourite TV chef  Nigella Lawson has remained silent in the four weeks since those now infamous paparazzi photos of her husband Charles Saatchi ‘grasping’ her neck, pinching her nose and covering her mouth.  Charles Saatchi has now announced through a Sunday newspaper that he is filing for divorce as Nigella has not come out to publicly defend his actions.

It is rather odd that we’ve been given such a deeply personal glimpse

edward snowden

If you were going to make the USA your biggest enemy, shhhurely you’d plan your travel arrangements a little better?  One way ticket to Mars anyone?

Edward Snowden’s grand whistleblowing revelations have not saved lives and were not super urgent so why did he not fly to a safe country before  making his announcements?  He could then skip along to the respective embassy that he would apply for asylum  and hey presto, relief and a new start while the USA initiated life-long legal proceedings for extradition.

Whilst Edward Snowden’s revelations have

Sweet Bird of Youth

sweet bird of youth

“Oh god” my friend gasped “what a tacky poster for a classic play, you can see his nipples for God’s sake”. He was referring to Sweet Bird of Youth by Tennessee Williams currently showing at the Old Vic.

The poster that so disgusted my well-heeled friend was of Kim Cattrall all glammed up in a 1950s feverish pose over a lovely naked man half her age.

Sold!

I went to see the play this week with three girlfriends and all of us, yes ALL of us, couldn’t think of a better combination of seeing our favourite SATC gal and Ripped Torso Man getting it on in our favourite theatre.

Holiday Health

Etihad-Yoga14-1_web1313

The holiday season is upon us and since Britain’s Summer is a wipeout once again, more likely than not you’ll be boarding a flight to the sun.  We all know that flying long haul can cause deep vein thrombosis and that we should try to stay active.  However, I’m guilty of just sitting there ocassionally rolling my ankles and only reluctantly getting up to go to the loo (airplane loos stink and are so gross!).  Some clever cookies have adapted various yoga moves to suit the constricted space in a cabin and this not only helps blood circulation but also helps in reducing anxiety related to flying and aiding general well being.

Syria: Herewegoagain…urgh…and Whose Side Should We Be On?

syrian-refugee-camp

The names and places change but the sad fact is that I am war fatigued and rather disillusioned and skeptical of Western governments justification of their desire to intervene in Syria.  No one listens to the general public and there is no alternative political party to vote for, only war-mongering ones. The Assad regime is no longer fashionable and Britain is on the side of the rebels.  Except the British government’s mouthpiece, the BBC, casually mentions towns that are captured by the rebels and the death toll of civilians at the hands of the rebels –  67 was the number of civilian deaths in ONE town in the last news report I listened to and they are meant to be the goodies!!

The old global political alliances seem to be reassuring us that nothing has changed in their mentality since the Cold War.

What Does A Male Feminist Look Like?

freddie mercury

The Guardian today published a lovely article written by Australian comedian Ben Pobjie addressed to Australian men about the embarrassing sexist attitudes reaching international media attention, particularly as it is directed at Australia’s female prime minister.  I was only just gearing up to write about the disgusting menu presented at an Australian fund raiser for their opposition party where the Australian PM’s body parts were described when today another news story broke.  This time the Australian PM was asked whether her hair stylist husband was gay.

Whilst the article makes for an interesting read and I’m glad to see Australian men upset at the behaviour of other Australian men, the most interesting part of the article for me was a tiny paragraph in the middle of the article:

But I understand the urge to deny that sexism is happening, because I’m a man and I hate talking about sexism: it makes me feel guilty and self-conscious. It is, frankly, awkward.

So now I turn my post away from Australian men to men in general. Why does sexism make you feel guilty and awkward?

Tumblr: All Thanks To Mum?

david karp tumblr

You couldn’t have missed the news that social networking site Tumblr was sold to Yahoo for $1.1 billion.  A new 26 year old techie genius joins the growing club of under 30s millionaires and deservedly so.  I was pondering though… would it have happened if his mum was more conservative?

David Karp (Tumblr creator and CEO) dropped out of school aged 14 at the advice of his mother, a teacher in a different school to her son’s and recommended home schooling.  She observed that her son was so engrossed in and obsessed with his computer that it was something to encourage and give space to.  What an amazing and brave mother!  Can you imagine that happening in your house??

A Letter To The Independent

Squirrel sisters first

Hey sister, go sister, soul sister, flow sister!!

I have a big sis and she is amazing and loads of fun and even acts like a big brother (why the F*** is that guy staring at you??!)!  She’s also a lawyer, something I mention to freaks around the world that I don’t want to do Bijness (business) with so they back off.

News of the Oxford child abuse ring is once again in the headlines as convictions are passed and the limelight once again falls on the Asian Community and in particular Muslims and Pakistanis.  It’s interesting as my sis and I discussed why it is that our white British friends aren’t asked to reflect on Christianity and feel guilty for child abuse and molestation by the likes of Jimmy Saville and everyone accused since.  We are meant to walk with our heads hung in shame and white Brits can Keep Calm and Carry On…abusing??

So today, my sis sent this letter to the Independent newspaper in response to a reader letter:

Dear Sirs

I am a Scottish Pakistani Muslim and now live in London.

Pakistan does not present  the world with immigrants from one all-binding culture, so why don’t some of your readers stop forcing one label on to all of us?  All  of my cousins are university educated
