Ornamental Adornments

Pankaj Nidhi 2

WIFW Pankaj & Nidhi SS14

Intricate adornments from Pompeii all the way to Medieval church facades…Indian designer duo, Panjak & Nidhi seemed to thoroughly enjoy researching the inspiration behind their Spring/Summer 2014 collection.  Hand cut fabrics appliqued to give a 3D effect and transparency were key looks.

Candies For Grown Ups!

sunglasses icon 1

Whilst not quite recovered from the fashion-frenzied hangover from all next season’s shows the flash bulbs went off once more across town for the launch of Sunglass Icon in Delhi’s luxury Emporio Mall.

Baroque and gold leaf detail in the D & G range

Sunglass Icon is the posher big sister of Sunglass Hut…Ray Bans are the cheapest sunnies on offer in the product range.  With Brit Bad Girl Jade Jagger splashed over the front and advertisements sporting baroque D & G sunglasses the launch was certainly eye-catching.

I arrived at the event with fellow blogger, Nupur Dayal of Indian style blog Joos.  We became friends as our butt cheeks squeezed together at the crowded Delhi shows.

Hall of Fame: Samant Chauhan

Samant Chauhan 8

WIFW: Samant Chauhan SS14

Young Indian fashion designer, Samant Chauhan designs beautiful clothing for both women and men.  He exhibits internationally and is on an upward trajectory after many years of dedication to his art.

Samant was born in Rajasthan and is passionate about working with master weavers from his area.  The NIFT graduate embarked upon fashion after first completing a physics degree at Bhagalpur University.  Samant consistently selects neutral and softer tones to counter the colourful spectrum typically offered by other designers in India.

So Samant, please tell me about your latest collection.

This is the series of Rajputana and this is the fourth season we are doing the same concept.

What is Rajputana?

Rajputana is about reviving the Rajputana name.  Rajasthan’s ancient name is Rajputana and I belong to that place which is one of the reasons I wanted to work on it.

Samant Chauhan 4

WIFW: Samant Chauhan SS14
The first season we did a collection, the story was based on how the Britishers influenced the entire Rajputana region … so we were inspired by a lot of Victorian motifs and shapes and volume.

Once Upon A Time Mumbai

mumbai-gang-rape

Mumbai used to be one of the safest cities for women… in Mumbai women can stay out late without worries.  These are a couple of comments I have heard repeatedly on the near blanket coverage of the recent Mumbai gangrape story.  A 22 year old photojournalist out on an assignment with a colleague was violently sexually assaulted by five men in the early evening of a central Mumbai area, albeit an abandoned mill.

A wake up call or is there a collective selected memory loss?

Manish Malhotra’s Couture Finale

Manish Malhotra PCJ Delhi Fashion Week Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika

Couturier Manish Malhotra needs no introduction.  Whilst Manish was inspired by the princely states and regalia of the 1930s, contemporary royalty in the form of Shah Rukh Khan and Bollywood princess Deepika Padukone walked the ramp for the designer. The beautifully coiffured hair underlined the inspiration with silhouettes and embroidery echoing the splendour of Indian – European architecture.  French shoe designer Christian Louboutin

Punjabi Rock n Roll & Kitsch Kedgeree

Ritu Beri 1

Who can say regardez-moi, the loudest?  On one monsoon evening in Delhi two of Indian fashion’s most entertaining designers presented their couture collections.  Both have strong associations with Paris but the words chalk and cheese were never more relevant.  The first was Ritu Beri, India’s 80s Paris-trained girl wonder whose show included a live band and a couple of designers she worked in collaboration with.

Exotic Punjab was the theme

Two’s Company, Three’s a Party!

20130731_0016_Sabyasachi

Calcutta-based designer, Sabyasachi, can best be described as the Marni of Indian fashion: quirky, off kilter, contemporary and highly relevant fashion for women that don’t do fashion.  He has a loyal following and is much like fellow designer Manish Malhotra in his influence over general Indian fashion.  What we see on the catwalk one evening will be copied the length and breadth of India the following lunch time (hardly anyone hits the haberdashers before then!).

Putting the Pomp in Pompeii and a Couture Finale

India Bridal Fashion Week Delhi 2013 - Model seen in Suneet Varma's Collection_2

Before mean old Mount Vesuvius erupted and engulfed Pompeii it was an exquisite, sophisticated city and home to some of the Roman period’s best arts and crafts. Pompeii provided the romantic backdrop to veteran Indian designer Suneet Varma’s bridal couture collection entitled ‘The Golden Bracelet’. There weren’t too many gold bracelets on display, however, there was a stunning gold bust that I absolutely must get my hands on.. it looks about my size…

The Princess Bride

Remember when Big and Carrie got married in Sex And The City? The second attempt, that is…the understated but elegant vintage outfit and small registry…That is the opposite of what was on offer for the gal that nothing short of fairytale and fantasy would do.  Both Ashima Leena and Rohit Bal showed bridal collections for princess brides albeit from slightly different inspirational eras.

The Gatsby Effect at Raghvendra Rathore

India Bridal Fashion Week Delhi 2013 - Model sporting Raghavendra Rathore's collection

If every Englishman’s home is his castle then every Indian’s wardrobe is his or her majestic palace such is the dominance of royal inspiration in Indian design.  Couturier Raghvendra Rathore belongs to the royal family of Jodhpur (also known as the blue city) and thus has a vast archive of influences to draw from.

The press notes cite the 1920s as inspiration and this was clear in the pretty and attention-grabbing accessories.

Dear Diary

Not another one!!

Dear Diary

I’m in my 30s and single.  Yeah, I’m ‘looking for lurve’ but I’m not in the slightest desperate and I’m happy enjoying my life with my friends and family.

Recently, in Delhi,  I have been approached by so many married men, one married to a very dear friend of mine, that have tried to kiss me and one even propose to me! Despite being already married.  Another married man thought nothing of sharing his sick fantasy – he wanted another two children with me besides his others.  Not with me mate!

The Art of Selecting A Watermelon

New Sufi Skincare Range

SUFI all new skin care range 2013 imperial hotel sufi skin care

Heralded as one of the finest hotels in Asia, the Imperial Hotel is one of my favourite relaxing destinations in Delhi.  It is the ultimate in refined and understated luxury.

The stunning Mughal inspired spa at the Imperial Hotel is called Sufi.  Two weeks ago on International Women’s Day I was invited to the launch of the Imperial Hotel’s exclusive Sufi botanical and organic skin care range.  Last year saw the launch of the divine Sufi eau de toilette and essential oils and now skincare…the brand is taking more and more space on my bathroom shelf!

I have been using three products from the new range (Daylight Moisturizer, Downpore Cleanser and Night Rose Moisturizer) for two weeks and highly recommend them.

Those Celebrities!

Maria Sharapova bill board

A rather intriguing celebrity endorsement that I have become aware of is the Maria Sharapova Tower in Gurgaon, an industrial mega-city outside Delhi.  Celebrities just aren’t governed by the same rules as the rest of us.  A tennis player can become an interior designer, pop stars can moonlight as fashion designers and perhaps one day we can call on celebrities to read out wills or perform surgery.  If you’re famous you don’t seem to need any formal qualifications or experience.

Would you live in a high rise apartment bock that had been endorsed by a celebrity you admired?

The website for this property company seems to have been spoofed or it’s just shockingly bad:

” Good news for all those enthralling and diehard fans of MARIA SHARAPOVA
