During my most recent trip to Delhi I had the pleasure of accompanying a friend, Anjali Gopalan, to her newly formed dog shelter which expanded to include other animals that she and her team ended up rescuing. Tucked away in the ancient Aravali Hills, the farm and dog shelter was all peace and quiet…until the dogs spotted me on the roof to photograph them!
Street dogs are part of Delhi life as much as traffic and sunshine. Far from wild, I feel that street dogs are far better behaved than the pampered pooches that have lovely homes.
With the tragic mauling of a 6 years old girl over the weekend, dangerous dogs are back on the agenda. The poor girl had half her ear bitten off and suffered severe bite wounds to her head and body. She will need continuous surgery for the foreseeable future, never mind the mental scarring from such an attack. The father of the child spoke of the incident as needless and described the dog owner as a spectator to the onslaught.
