Delhi Couture Week: Day 4

Day 4 of PCJ Delhi Couture Week 2012 presented two shows of opposite extremes.  Both designers referenced bridalwear but whereas Shantanu & Nikhil’s fantasy bride was gothic and dark, Manish Malhotra’s was a fluttery sugar-dipped princess.

Shantanu & Nikhil’s show notes were far too deep in reference points especially since they threw in the towel and conformed to produce a bridalwear collection.  Why not simply state that you want to do a different type of couture collection?

Referencing strong women

Basically, I’m A Hero

There are not many places in the world where young men describe themselves as heroes or machos but India is one of them.  I haven’t been back in Delhi long and a friend mischievously warned me of her new physiotherapist who comes to her house every other day.  The encounter was hilarious.

A tight t-shirted, coiffured muscle man came in and started working on my friend’s shoulder while

Rich List Women

The top 5 women in the Sunday Times Rich List are said to be there by default, meaning that they are there through divorce or inheritance write Jane Martinson in the Guardian. In fact the 8th woman in the list, Dame Mary Perkins, founder of Specsavers, is the first woman to accumulate her fortune of £870million through her own business venture and is 84th on the overall list. Apparently, there are no men in the Sunday Times Rich List who have amassed a fortune through marriage or inheritance. What none of them have inherited a family business that their father built????

Martinson suggests that this is no triumph for feminism but I do beg to differ?

Why Are Women Always To Blame?

Dear Diary

What is it about Asian society that will always blame the woman for everything that goes wrong and for nothing that goes right?

Gossiping among men is as potent as the stereotypes against women portray……. In fact it is even more dangerous because they are taken seriously.

Everywhere But Nowhere

Can you imagine being watched, followed and terrorised? Can you imagine feeling frightened, unsafe and reclusive? Can you imagine wondering what you have done to make you a victim? How can he/she be everywhere but nowhere?

They know you but you don’t know them. They can see you but you can’t see them. They are watching you and you don’t even know it.

It’s not an advert for blockbuster horror movie but real life for many stalked victims.

Calling Mr Vain

A new report claimed that British men spend longer than British women on personal grooming, coming from a family full of vain men I could have told them that.  I can’t comment too much, I take ages … the words ‘quick’ and ‘shower’ do not ever go together.

Imagine that this survey was of British men, not traditinally known

Moustache Month

Movember is a month-long initiative aimed at raising awareness of men’s health issues such as prostate cancer.  It’s wonderful seeing men trying to grow their moustaches and figure out that to do with them as the…art?…of moustache grooming is forgotten.

Daniel Craig joins in, above, and below you will find some other lovely or otherwise moustaches:

Robert De Niro from Godfather Part II, rocks his ‘tache.

Men in Heels

An interesting new trend from NYC sees men squeezing their size 11s into the latest designer heels and it seems that the sky is the limit as to how high they will go and how much men will spend.  Of course many designers don’t produce styles in larger sizes so some of these guys have spent $3,000 on custom designs.

Women On Top

Yesterday at dinner, I was discussing how a number of companies owned by married couples with men at the helm where struggling during this recession and my friend asked whether I had read Tim Adams’ article in the Observer on Sunday. As I hadn’t, he sent me a copy and I am delighted to share this with every working woman.

Testosterone and high finance do not mix: so bring on the women  was an enlightening read on both behavioural evidence and  neuroeconomic research around the global  financial crisis and how the picture would have been different if women has been in controlling positions.

Sari or No Sari?

Dear Diary,

Why is it that whenever there is an Asian event, the women go all dressed up in their Asian clothing and the men go just as they are? Sometimes men barely manage to put on a suit nevermind a Kurta and if a woman would turn up in her casual English attire, she would be stared at, judged and gossiped about.
