Vivre Le France

After 31 years, France elects a socialist President, Francoise Hollande, who will immediately overturn right wing policies of scrapping tax breaks for the rich and taking steps to cap the public deficit. His first few quick symbolic measures will include freezing the cost of fuel for three months to ease the nation’s wallets and cutting his own presidential salary by 30%.

Gay? Get Over It

The London Mayor, Boris Johnson, has intervened to ban a right-wing Christian group’s adverts going up on London buses.  The adverts were apparently a response to another group’s advert: Some people are gay: Get over it!

BNP: Not On My High Street

The British National Party (BNP) were out in voice on my local high street on Saturday, and I was surprised to see them in my middle class white neighbourhood. This is the second time in a month that I have been exposed to far right demonstrations. A fortnight ago the English Defence League marched in Leicester where there were some frightening sights and fearful tensions brewing.

Sadness And A Strange Relief

The atrocities in Norway were I’m sure shocking for all of us as we listened in disbelief at the loss of life in and the sadistic manner in which the killer carried out his killing spree.  However, even while the news broke as a non-practicing Muslim my stomach turned twice: once for the victims and their families but secondly for the wrath of the media

Zip Your Lips

A Dutch court ruled yesterday that the right-wing politician was not guilty of inciting hatred but his comments came under free speech.  While Islamic groups in The Netherlands won right of appeal the politician is declaring a day of victory for freedom of speech (a pretty over-used declaration).

The politician compared the Quran to Hitler’s Mein Kampf and called for a halt to Muslim immigration.  While I think all types of right-wing extremists have jaded views I do think he is right to also declare that he won the right to debate Islam in public.
