Coming Into Fashion

Yesterday I had the pleasure of perusing the Condé Nast: Coming Into Fashion photography exhibition at the Edinburgh City Art Centre.  Displaying a century of fashion photography from the rich archive of some of the world’s best loved fashion magazines, it was an exhibition for lovers of beauty.

Beauty in a general sense of the meaning, not just because the models are beautiful.  Photography from pre-photoshop times is hands down more amazing than its enhanced cousin.  The exhibition also includes beautiful illustrations of early Vogue covers by the great master, Eduardo Benito.

The extensive display covered photography by the greats such as Norman Parkinson, Cecil Beaton, Helmut Newton, Mario Testino and this wonderful photograph by John Rawlings:

Modelling is not often regarded as brave but models are often required to perform daring fetes such as hanging off roof tops so that a dress can catch a breeze for that one perfect shot or they are required to twist and turn in ways that makes my back sore just observing.  No ‘elf & safety rules apply!

Full price entry is only £5 and the exhibition is on until 8 September 2013.
